After two months in Alaska we finally managed to get two days off together and get out of Browntown! So we got a ride from Browntown to Homer, which is about 3 hours away. Homer is "a quaint drinking village with a small fishing problem". It smelled like dead fish and had the look and feel of Duluth, MN.
| This is a lookout point we stopped at right before we drove into Homer. You can sort of see the mountains that line the Kachemak Bay. By the way, that is the Pacific Ocean. |
| Proof that we are still alive and well. Our first time together by an ocean! |
| We decided to stop at the Alaska Islands and Oceans Visitor Center which on the edge of town. They have a cool exhibit inside that explains some of the history of Alaska, especially Kachemak Bay. |
| This is the trail head of the Beluga Slough Trail which is starts at the visitor center. The trail brings you down to the beach. |
| This is Erin and Casey walking down the trail through the marshy part. |
| These wildflowers are just as tall as Casey is. Pretty crazy! |
| Every where you go in Alaska right now there is fireweed blooming. It's gorgeous! |
| The beach and some of the crazy clouds we saw. |
| The point of this picture is to show how extreme the tide is in Kachemak Bay. It averages a vertical change of 15 ft but can change as much as 30+ ft. |
| This is the Homer Spit, about a 10 min car ride from the last picture. The Homer Spit is the tourist hot spot. It has lots of shops, restaurants, and charters in these little shacks that line the beach. |
| More crazy clouds across the bay. |
| A jellyfish that Casey found while looking for cool rocks and beach glass. |
| We camped at a place called Seaside Farm. The have a hostel in the basement of their main building, a couple of cabins, a field for camping, and a small farm with horses and chickens. And as the name suggests in is by the sea. |
| Here is where we set up camp. You can kind of see the ocean and mountains in the background. This is probably one of the nicest and most beautiful campsites we have ever been to. |
| Our beach for the night! About a five minute downhill hike from out campsite. |
| Our second campfire this summer! You can kind of see our fellow campers Amy and Bo in the background along with Erin's shoe on the bottom. |
| The Homer Spit at night across the bay from us. |
| View from our campsite in the morning. You can see how extreme the tide is. |
| Our campsite the next morning. |
| Horses, Chickens, and the mountains. Doesn't get much better than that. |
Love the blog posts, Leah. Good pics too. Keep 'em coming.
