Our Next Adventure: Colorado

I'm sure most of you have heard, but for those of you who have not, Casey and I got jobs in Breckenridge, Colorado for the winter season.  We are going to be working for Kokopelli Ski Holidays as a chalet couple at Chalet Anna (their website is: http://www.ski-kokopelli.com/).  This means that 5 nights and 6 mornings a week we will cook and clean for up to 8 guests.

Our journey began on November 21st, 2011 at 9:06am in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. We were in Sauk Centre to celebrate an early Thanksgiving with Casey's parents. Originally we had planned to go through South Dakota and Wyoming to see the Badlands and Mount Rushmore, but snow and construction forced us to change our plan at the last minute. So we ended up driving back to the Twin Cities where we had originally started. This was a good thing though because we forgot Leah's snowboard and our sauce pan. Plus we stopped at Petco and bought Chance some extra goodies (we really miss our buddy).  In reality our journey began at 12:06pm in Bloomington with 146,912 miles on our beautiful new (to us) Subaru.

Our next stop was just after the MN/IA border at a really cool rest stop that looked like a barn and had a coffee shop, gift store, lots of vending machines and tons of travel info. We ate some lunch, got gas and were on our way. (147,022 miles)

We stopped again at another rest stop a couple hours later. We decided that Iowa has better drivers and rest stops but is boring and smells like manure. (147,120 miles)

Our next stop was outside the Nebraska border. (147,272 miles)

After entering Nebraska our next stop was just outside Omaha at a Flying J (Leah's first experience with a Flying J, very impressive) on our way to Lincoln. (147,315 miles)

At 8:30pm we arrived in Lincoln and decided to get some hot food at Wendy's. Immediately after we went next door and got some Tums. (147,349 miles)

At 10:45pm we decided that we should try to get some rest before finishing our journey (we had been driving for about 13 hours). This didn't work as well as we hoped and we ended striking out again at about midnight. (147,483 miles)

After 2 hours of driving we decided we really should try to get some rest. So we stopped at Bosselman Travel Center not far from the Colorado border. We figured it would be more fun to cross the border when it was lighter out anyway. We "slept" until around 5:30am and struck out again. (147,651 miles)

Our first stop in Colorado was at 8:45am at a rest stop not far from Denver. Lots and lots of black angus cows... they looked delicious ;) (147,779 miles)

We were starting to feel the elevation at our next stop in Georgetown at about 8,600 ft. (147,887 miles)

At 11:00am we arrived in Breckenridge and had a delicious breakfast at Daylight Doughnuts. Casey was very happy to find out that Breckenridge not only has one but two doughnut shops only a block away from each other. After breakfast we met with our new boss who took us to our condo where we met our room mates and started settling in. (147,928 miles)

Total miles: 1,133
Total travel time: about 27 hours
Total fuel cost: $168.20
Average cost per gallon: $3.36/gal
Least expensive: $3.09 in Nebraska
Most expensive: $3.57 in Colorado

Fun Fact: In Iowa and Nebraska 91 octane gas is cheaper than 89 octane gas because they add 10% ethanol.

  1. Hi Leah and Casey,

I checked out the website. Never heard of their concept of a 'catered chalet' but it sounds like a great idea (for the guests anwyway- I imagine you as the chalet couple might get sick of a group after day one if they're rude, obnoxious, demanding, etc.)

Good luck and enjoy what free time you can get out there. We'll miss you at Christmas time.

    Love,
    Chris (and Sandra)
